The Otago Community Hospice provides palliative care education for healthcare professionals involved in end of life care within the Otago region. Throughout the year our team offers holistic education that is practical, theoretical and reflective, across the range of topics relevant to palliative care.
Palliative Care philosophy has a strong affinity with Te Whare Tapa Wha – the Maori health model put forward by Mason Durie in 1982. Both recognise the value of considering the physical, the psychological, the spiritual and the family/whanau aspects of a person’s wellbeing.
The principles of Te Whare Tapa Wha serve as a framework for clinical practice and the palliative care education provided by the Otago Community Hospice team.
