Home About Us News Spotlight on New RN Joel Theissen-Papp
Joel isn't a new face at OCH but he recently joined us as an RN in the IPU so a good time to learn a bit more about him.

What was your previous job?

Prior to becoming an RN at Hospice I worked at Hospice as an EN, worked at Mosgiel Health Centre as an EN and studied full time Bachelor of Nursing at Otago Polytechnic. Before this I was working at DPH on the resource team.

What prepared you for this role?

Working as a practise nurse prior to here has given me the confidence when it comes to problem solving and phone triaging and working at DPH improved my time management skills.

You’ve been here a few weeks now, how have you found it? Any surprises?

I have really enjoyed it so far and have learnt a lot. Huge change from being a casual to becoming permanent. I enjoy the shift work, and it gives good variety. No surprises as such other than the expanding waste line due to the snack cupboard.

What appeals to you most about the role?

The fact that we are all here for the same reason and we work collaboratively. I have felt it such a privilege to be there for patients and their families in the last days of life and trying to make it as smooth sailing for them as possible.

What appeals to you most about working with hospice?

The group of people. Everyone here has been so welcoming and helpful. I have enjoyed being able to expand my scope from IPU to CC and RCT also.

What other interests do you have?

I spend many hours of my weeks watching or coaching football and planning for training sessions and matchdays. Other than that, I spend time with my wife usually drinking coffee when we aren't on opposite shifts at work.
