Home About Us News Meet IPU Nurse Meegan Taylor

What was your previous job?

I worked for just under two years as an assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation Enrolled Nurse on 6A at Dunedin Hospital. I worked there with Kelsey who also works in the Hospice IPU.

What prepared you for this role?

I think the patient assessment skills I acquired in my previous role have assisted in my transition to palliative care. Working in rehab the focus was generally mobility which I have been able to implement when mobilising patients around the IPU.

You’ve been here a while now, how have you found it? Any surprises?

I have loved transitioning into palliative care. I appreciate the time we get to connect with patients and their whanau. The staff are so compassionate and I enjoy the chats at the end of shift. When the unit isn’t too busy ;)

A surprise that comes to mind would be seeing the Pukeko that was spotted a few weeks ago outside the window of the north family lounge.

What appeals to you most about the role?

Working with such supportive people who make this job special. Working with patients and whanau to provide care that aligns with peoples’ wishes/values. The way staff come together to support one another.

What appeals to you most about working with hospice?

I have always believed that hospice is a special place and I’m very excited that I get to be part of that. Being able to connect with patients and their whanau, providing holistic care in a difficult time.

What other interests do you have?

Some of the IPU team know that I play the flute. I also love to sing and play the piano. I am trying to teach myself to crochet and am currently making a little bumblebee and sunflower. I have been trying to read more this year as a goal and am currently reading ‘we’ll prescribe you a cat’ by Syou Ishida.
