We recently had a welcome ceremony for Harlam, our new Kaupapa Māori Care Coordinator. It was a great event with everyone introducing themselves as per usual. But for IPU nurse, Monnie, no introductions were necessary.

Monnie was Harlam’s teacher when he was five years old!

Hard to believe she is older enough to have taught Harlam almost 30 years ago, but it's true. Monnie only recently retrained as a nurse, proving it's never too late to follow your passion.

Monnie and Harlam kindly agreed for me to share their connection story on social media and man did they go viral!

They've had 17,728 Facebook Views to date and 87.9% of viewers were non-followers of our OCH Facebook page.

Some of the comments they received were...

"Go Monnie. So proud of you."

"You will be blessed to have him - he's a beautiful man with a kind heart."

"So good Monnie. We love you at swimming too."

"Go well in your new journey Harlam. You were made for this mahi."

When I asked Harlam for a quote to use for the story he said 'Tūwhitia te hopo' – feel the fear and do it anyway.

A fitting sentiment for us all to take into the new year.
