Data Scientist Sets us up For Success

Alana is a Data Scientist for Xero. She contacted me a couple of months ago wanting to find a place to volunteer for a day as part of Xero's workplace commitment that allows staff to volunteer in the community for a day (and still receive pay).

Alana had a positive personal experience with Hospice several years ago when her grandmother received hospice services.

Usually managing one person for a day takes more time to organise and manage than is worth it, however there was something that stood out with Alana's initial email and we decided to take the punt.

The project that we put on the table for her was a data trawl to find when and where OCH was mentioned in the media and create a spread sheet as a reference file. This is very helpful for monitoring the success of our marketing/fundraising strategies.

I had assumed that she would be googling and manually compiling the spreadsheet but when we put the project to her she suggested that she could create the prompts for AI to do it and an instruction booklet for us to explain exactly what she had done (which would mean that it is a semi automated process that we can up date as required). 

Alana not only pulled a lot of data, her one day with us left us a process that will make us more efficient going forward and allow us to something that we were too time poor to do in the past.

We are super grateful to Alana for her time and expertise, and to Xero for lending her to us for a day.
